Kabisurya Nagar is named after the writer Kabisurya Baladev Rath. Kavisurya Nagar was once called Boirani and was an important town of the Athgarh zamindari.The Raja of Athagarh, Balunkeswar Harichandan Jagadeb, belonging to the Baghel dynasty was the patron of Kavisurya Baladev Rath. Kishorchandran Champu and many other works have been dedicated by Baladev Rath to the Raja of Athgarh. In Athgarh, which is near Kabisurya Nagar there is the famous temple of Kanaka Durga Thakurani. As per legend Kavisurya Baladev Rath owes his literatary talents to the blessings of the goddess Kanakadurga. The Kanakadurga temple is managed by Madhusudan Harichandan Jagadeb, the last surviving zamindar of Athgarh and Tekkali. Kabisurya Nagar had a population of 16,092. Males constitute 41% of the population and females 59%. Kabisurya Nagar has an average literacy rate of 62%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 72%, and female literacy is 53%. In Kabisurya Nagar, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Kabisurya Nagar is a main market for the green, fresh vegetables produced in nearby villages (Bolasara, Balyasara, Brahmanichhai, Mantapada, Arabindanagar, Gudiali, Jarada, Athagada, Pathara, Sundariapda, Golamundala, Sialia etc.).
